Letter 2104

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: John, Bishop of Ravenna
To: Pope Gregory I
Date: ~592 AD
Context: John of Ravenna humbly answers Gregory's charges point by point and defends his church's ancient privileges

Holy Father, I have received your letter with all the reverence due to the apostolic see, and I respond to each charge laid against me in the spirit of a son seeking understanding, not a subject seeking to evade accountability.

To the first charge: I acted as I did because the circumstances seemed to require it, and I believe that when you understand the situation fully you will see it differently. To the second: the practice you question has the support of ancient custom in this church, which your predecessors have consistently respected. To the third: I was not informed of what had been decided before I acted; had I known, I would have waited for your guidance.

On the matter of this church's privileges: the church of Ravenna has enjoyed certain ancient rights and exemptions that have been confirmed repeatedly by your predecessors, and I lay them before you now not as arguments against your authority but as elements of a situation that I hope you will take fully into account. I submit myself to your judgment, trusting in your justice.
