Letter 2066

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Theodorus, Physician
Date: ~592 AD
Context: Gregory exposes an unjust law and urges Theodorus to present a petition to the emperor about it

My dear Theodorus, there is a matter of real injustice in the current law that I want to bring to your attention, because your access to the emperor gives you a capacity to address it that I cannot easily exercise from this office. The law as it now stands causes genuine hardship to those who should be protected by it, and the inequity is not subtle — it is plain to anyone who examines it honestly. I am asking you to take this petition and present it personally to the emperor on behalf of those affected. Your skill in medicine has always been accompanied by a concern for human welfare; please let that concern extend to this legal matter. I will be in your debt.
