Letter 2064

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great

Gregory to Chrysanthus, Bishop of Spoleto [in Umbria].

Two years ago we assigned to your fraternity the office of visiting the Church of Mevania [modern Bevagna, a town in Umbria]. In carrying out this duty, seek out with zeal and diligence persons who may be worthy of ordination to the priesthood there. First examine their lives and conduct through careful inquiry, so that they may prove capable of meeting the needs of the faithful. By this provision, may the people dwelling there — who tearfully complain that they have been deprived of communion due to the lack of priests — rejoice that they have received it once more, and may the sacred solemnities of the Mass no longer be absent from those churches.

Furthermore, let your fraternity take care to travel there for the confirming of infants [*consignatio* — the rite of confirmation/chrismation, administered by a bishop], so that nothing from the neglect of pastoral responsibility may weigh upon your conscience.
