Letter 2059

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Maximianus, Bishop of Syracuse [Sicily]
Date: ~592 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Maximianus to send to Rome the accusers of the bishop of Agrigentum and the documents bearing on his case.

Gregory to Maximianus, bishop of Syracuse.

The case of the bishop of Agrigentum [a major city in southern Sicily] needs to be examined at a higher level. I direct you to send to Rome both the men who have brought accusations against him and whatever documentary evidence is relevant to the case.

A proper judicial examination of a bishop requires that the evidence and the accusers be present so that the charges can be tested properly. Secondhand summaries are not sufficient. Send them to Rome.
