Letter 2044

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Bonifatius, bishop
Date: ~593 AD
Context: A second letter to Bishop Bonifatius on a matter of ecclesiastical governance.

Gregory to Bonifatius, bishop.

I am following up on my previous letter because I want to ensure that the direction I gave has been clearly understood and is being carried out.

The principle I stressed — vigilance against seeking human praise for good works — applies in the present case as well as in general. Do what is right because it is right, and do not adjust your conduct based on who is watching.

If there are developments in the matter I previously addressed that require updated direction, write to me with specifics.
Gregory
