Letter 2040

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: John, bishop
Date: ~592 AD
Context: Gregory directs Bishop John to judge the case of Viulandi against Gravinian without further delay.

Gregory to John, bishop.

The case between Viulandi and Gravinian has been before you long enough. I direct you to judge it without further delay, setting aside whatever reasons — legitimate or otherwise — have caused the matter to drag on.

Justice delayed is a real harm to the parties involved, particularly to whichever party has a legitimate grievance that has not been addressed. Every day the case remains unresolved, that party endures a continuing injustice.

Hear whatever evidence remains to be heard, weigh it honestly, and render judgment. If the case is complex, consult with colleagues as needed. But do it promptly.

Report your judgment to me when it has been rendered.
Gregory
