Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)→Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Natalis, Bishop of Salona [modern Split, Croatia]
Date: ~592 AD
Context: Gregory rebukes Bishop Natalis for his constant dinner parties, and directs him to appoint Honoratus as archdeacon.
Gregory to Natalis, bishop of Salona.
Reports have reached me that you give yourself over too frequently and too enthusiastically to dinner parties. This is not what a bishop's life should look like. I do not say that hospitality is wrong — it is not, and a bishop who never entertains would be failing in another duty. But there is a difference between proper episcopal hospitality and the kind of convivial socializing that keeps a bishop from his proper work and sets a poor example for his clergy.
I urge you to moderate this tendency. The time and energy spent at table should be adequate to the demands of hospitality and no more.
On another matter: I direct you to appoint Honoratus as your archdeacon. This is my decision, based on reports of his character and ability, and I expect it to be carried out.
