From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Sabinus, subdeacon
Date: ~592 AD
Context: Gregory orders Sabinus to hand over a garden belonging to Felicianus to a monastery of handmaids of God.
Gregory to Sabinus, subdeacon.
The garden which belonged to Felicianus is to be transferred to the monastery of the handmaids of God. Make the necessary arrangements to accomplish this transfer properly and with appropriate documentation so that the monastery's right to the property is secure.
The monastery in question serves God through the lives of women dedicated to his service. Their material needs — including the ability to produce food for themselves — are part of what enables that dedicated life. Property administered on behalf of such communities is to be treated with the same care and diligence we apply to all church property.
