Letter 13075

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great

**From:** Gregory I, Bishop of Rome
**To:** Chrysanthus, Bishop of Spoleto
**Date:** ~603 AD
**Context:** Addresses foreign persons living with church people; instructs the bishop to correct this arrangement.

I have heard that certain persons of outside status are living in arrangements with people under your church's care, and this is not acceptable. Such situations breed scandal and must be addressed. I charge you to look into this matter carefully and put a stop to whatever arrangements are inappropriate. The reputation of those under your pastoral care must be protected, and any who are living in ways contrary to proper order should be corrected or separated from church company.
