Letter 13029

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Anthemius, Subdeacon of Campania
Date: ~603 AD
Context: Gregory orders Anthemius to address Paschasius, bishop of Naples, regarding his neglect of duty

I must return once more to the matter of Bishop Paschasius of Naples, whose neglect of his pastoral duties has become a source of ongoing concern. I am directing you to speak with him in the most direct terms possible about the specific failures I have previously identified. He is to understand that continued inaction is not an option. My patience on this matter has limits, and those limits are being approached. If after your intervention he still does not act, report that to me immediately and I will take more formal steps. This situation cannot be allowed to persist.
