Letter 13013

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: The Church of Saint Martin at Augustodunum, Presbyter and Abbot Lupus
Date: ~603 AD
Context: Gregory addresses the church of Saint Martin, which had been seized by Bishop Syagrius and Brunhild

The church of Saint Martin, which your community has served with devotion, has suffered at the hands of those with more power than right. I have looked into the matter of what was done by Bishop Syagrius and — as reports indicate — with the involvement of Queen Brunhild, and I find it troubling. Churches and monasteries must be protected from the ambitions of those, however powerful, who would appropriate what belongs to God's service. I am writing separately to those concerned to demand restitution. In the meantime, hold fast to your community and your prayer. Justice moves slowly in this world, but it does move.
