Letter 13003

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: The Roman Citizens
Date: ~603 AD
Context: Gregory teaches that Sabbath laws are not to be observed to the letter; the body may rest on Sunday

Brothers, I have heard reports of a practice among some of you that troubles me: the observance of the Jewish Sabbath, as though Christians were bound by it literally. Let me be direct. We are not Jews. The Sabbath of the Law of Moses was a shadow pointing to the true rest which is Christ. To observe it as the Jews observe it — ceasing from work on a specific day as a religious obligation — is to fall back into the shadows when the light has come. Sunday, the day of the Lord's resurrection, is our day of rest and worship. Rest on that day, honor it, gather for the Eucharist. But do not bind your conscience with Judaizing practices that the apostles have freed you from.
