Letter 12002

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Savinella, Columba, and Galla
Date: ~602 AD
Context: Gregory praises the mutual charity of these three women

The report of your mutual kindness toward one another — each caring for the others as equals in Christ — has reached me, and I cannot forbear expressing my joy at it. In a world where friendship so often depends on advantage and equality dissolves under the pressure of need, what you have shown is rare and beautiful. To love "among equals" [a paribus], as the old phrase goes, is easy enough; to love with genuine selflessness, to give rather than receive — this is the love of the Gospels. Hilarus the chartulary, who brought me this good report, spoke of you with affection and admiration. Continue as you have begun, and do not let the world's indifference wear down what God has given you.
