Letter 11008

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Alexander, Praetor of Sicily
Date: ~601 AD
Context: Gregory appoints John the deacon to administer the Ravenna church patrimony

It has become necessary to appoint someone of reliable judgment to govern the ecclesiastical patrimony of Ravenna, and I have chosen John the deacon for this responsibility. He is known to you, I believe, and his capabilities are not in question. I ask that you facilitate his appointment and support his work in whatever way your office permits. The patrimony of the Church must be administered with both integrity and efficiency — the poor depend on it, as do the clergy whose sustenance comes from its revenues. Please extend to John whatever cooperation you would extend to this see directly, and let me know if difficulties arise.
