Letter 1090

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Leander, Bishop of Hispalis [Seville]
Date: ~591 AD
Context: Gregory mourns the burden of episcopal office; rejoices at the conversion of King Recared

My dear Leander — you of all people will understand what I am about to say: this office is a burden beyond what any man can rightly be expected to carry. The cares of it press on me daily, and the infirmities of my body, which never leave me, make the load heavier than I can describe. I long for the contemplative life I left; I entered the active life against my will; and here I am, managing an institution when I should be preparing my soul.

And yet. The news from Hispania fills me with a joy that almost compensates for everything. King Recared has turned to the true faith, and with him an entire nation of Visigoths. This is the work of the Holy Spirit, and I rejoice with tears. What years of argument could not achieve, God has accomplished in a moment of royal grace. Give the king my warmest congratulations and my continued prayers. And give yourself my love — you who labored for this conversion when it seemed impossible.
