Letter 1030

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Pope Gregory I
To: Romanus, Patrician and Exarch of Italy
Date: ~591 AD
Context: Gregory asks the exarch to ensure Bishop Blandus is either tried at a synod or allowed to return to his church

The case of Bishop Blandus has been dragging on in a way that is fair to no one. He stands under accusation without resolution, and this state of limbo is harmful both to him and to the community he should be serving. My request is straightforward: either convene a proper synod to examine the charges against him, hear the evidence, and deliver a judgment — or allow him to return to his church while the matter is resolved through proper channels. What cannot continue is the present situation, in which he is neither cleared nor condemned and the faithful of his diocese are left without their pastor. I ask your authority to help bring this to a proper resolution.
