Gregory to Eulogius, Patriarch of Alexandria.

"As cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country" (Proverbs 25:25). And what better news can reach me, as far as the welfare of the holy Church is concerned, than hearing of the health and safety of your most dear Holiness? Through your perception of the light of truth, you illuminate the Church with the word of preaching and shape it for the better by the example of your conduct.

Whenever I reflect on how united we are in spirit, and know that I remain fixed in your heart, I give thanks to Almighty God that charity cannot be divided by distance. Though far apart in body, we are inseparable in soul.

Our mutual friend the deacon Anatolius has written to inform me that nothing in Constantinople's ecclesiastical affairs has been disrupted by earthly pressures. But I already knew, I believe, that your Blessedness had spoken in the Church's cause there -- and I rejoice to think that wherever you happen to be present, my own absence is never felt. I know that you, as a minister of truth, a follower of Peter, and a preacher of the holy Church, would say everything that ought to be heard from a teacher of the Apostle Peter's See.

Before these days, when Abramius of Alexandria came to me, I had already written to your Holiness with my thoughts on your writings against the Agnoite heretics [who claimed Christ's human nature was ignorant of certain things], and explained why I had been so late in replying. But Abramius was reportedly delayed in Naples by difficulties of navigation, so I write again in the same sense.

Your teaching against the so-called Agnoetae gave us much to admire and nothing to criticize. I had already written at length to our son Anatolius the deacon about the same matter.

Gregory to Eulogius, Bishop of Alexandria.
