Letter 10029

Gregory the Great (Wisigothic)Unknown|gregory great
From: Gregory the Great, Pope, in Rome
To: Constantius, Bishop of Milan
Date: ~600 AD
Context: Gregory instructs Constantius to bring to a final verdict the unclear case of Bishop Pompeius.

Gregory to Constantius, bishop of Milan.

The case of Bishop Pompeius has been in an uncertain state for too long. An unclear situation does not benefit anyone: not the bishop, whose status is ambiguous; not his church, which does not know how to relate to him; and not the church generally, which is poorly served by unresolved episcopal cases.

I direct you to bring this matter to a definite judgment. Examine whatever evidence remains to be examined. Consult with your suffragans if that is helpful. And then render a clear verdict that resolves the ambiguity once and for all.

If the verdict goes against Pompeius, the consequences follow from it. If it goes in his favor, restore him with appropriate clarity. But end the uncertainty.
