To our fellow bishops in Italy and Gaul, from Meletius, Eusebius, Basil, and the undersigned bishops of the East — greetings in the Lord.

**1.** When you're suffering, even a deep sigh brings some relief. Even tears help lighten the weight. But what helps us more than sighs or tears is the chance to tell you what we're going through.

We also hold onto a better hope: that once you hear about our troubles, you might finally send the help we've long expected for the churches in the East — help that hasn't come yet. God, in his wisdom, must have decided we needed to endure these trials longer. News of our situation has reached the ends of the earth. You know what's happening. And you're not indifferent — you're disciples of the apostle who taught that love for your neighbor fulfills the whole law [Romans 13:10]. But God's just judgment has held you back until now.

When you've heard everything — especially the details our brother, the deacon Sabinus, can tell you in person beyond what this letter covers — we beg you: be stirred to action. Show mercy. Set aside your hesitation. Take on this labor of love without worrying about the long journey, your own busy schedules, or any other excuse.

**2.** This isn't about one church in danger, or two, or three. This heresy has spread from the borders of Illyricum [the western Balkans] to the Thebaid [upper Egypt — essentially the entire eastern Roman Empire]. The infamous Arius [who taught that Christ was a created being, not co-eternal with the Father] planted the seeds. Many others cultivated them with great energy between his time and ours. Now the deadly fruit has ripened.

True doctrine is being overthrown. Church order is in chaos. Men with no fear of God scramble for high office, and everyone knows that the reward for impiety is a bishop's throne. The worse a man blasphemes, the more qualified people think he is to lead. Clerical integrity has vanished. There is a complete shortage of shepherds who actually know how to tend the Lord's flock. Ambitious men waste charitable funds on their own luxuries and on buying influence. Canon law is ignored. Sin goes unpunished — because men who got their positions through political favors feel obligated to look the other way when their patrons offend. Fair judgment is dead. Everyone does whatever they want.

Vice has no limits. The people have no restraint. Leaders are afraid to speak up, because those who rose to power through human connections are slaves to the people who promoted them. Even defending orthodox teaching has become an excuse for personal vendettas — men hide their private grudges behind a mask of zeal for truth. Others, terrified of being exposed for disgraceful behavior, whip up the people into internal wars so their own crimes get lost in the general chaos.

And so this war allows no truce, because the people waging it profit from the disorder continuing.
